Wildfire south of Merritt off Highway 5 now considered 'held'

The fire is not currently impacting travel along the highway

A fire has been reported south of Merritt on Highway 5 on July 2.

UPDATE: 9:40 p.m.

The wildfire that sparked earlier Wednesday afternoon is now considered held. 

According to BC Wildfire Service based on fuel and weather conditions and resource availability, the blaze is to remain within the current perimeter, control line or boundary.

The wildfire grew to an estimated .3 hectares in size.


The BC Wildfire Service is responding to a blaze south of Merritt on Highway 5. 

Human activity is believed to be the cause of the fire, which is located about 25 kilometres south of Merritt near Exit 256 on the highway. 

The fire was first reported on July 2. 

As of the most recent update from BCWS, the fire is estimated to be about 0.3 hectares in size. 

It is not currently impacting travel on Highway 5.
