A total of 125 bags of garbage, some tires, car parts, a shopping cart and a toilet were hauled in during the community-wide Earth Day cleanup held Saturday, April 20 in the Bella Coola Valley.
Coordinated by the Bella Coola Valley Tourism Association, the event included a free barbecue to thank everyone for their efforts Five lucky winners of a random draw left with prizes of $100 each.
BCVTA board members Abra Silver and Shannon Lansdowne thanked everyone for participating and encouraged the community to do its part to keep the valley free of garbage all year round.
They said there were additional efforts from others in the valley who contributed to clean up throughout the week of Earth Day which was not included in the pile of 125 bags.
A number of people also picked up garbage days before and after the event who did not make it to the BBQ and who took their bags to the dump themselves.
