Bella Coola Valley’s Nusastum Elementary School presents The Lion King

All 52 students helped with the production

Students at Nusatsum Elementary School in the Bella Coola Valley put on a musical production of The Lion King at the end of May.

Teacher Krista Wilson said it was the first time the school did a production since she has taught there.

She collaborated with band teacher Alex Fawcitt-Riis and they decided to do the Lion King, which was based off the movie.

“The whole school - 52 students - were involved,” Wilson said, noting there were 13 lead roles, a stage crew and a choir.

Grade 7 Mathias Conley originally auditioned for Scar, but got the part of Simba.

He told superfastbody on Friday, June 23, he enjoys acting and also is part of a drama club that meets after school.

Wilson’s mom, retired Bella Coola Elementary School teacher Sheila Wilson, helped and engaging the students to help make the sets and the costumes, which included some great masks.

Rehearsals were held during the day.

The students did two performances, one during the day for students from Bella Coola Elementary and Acwsalcta schools and then one in the evening for the community.

When asked if there are plans for a theatre production next year, Wilson said they will have to wait and see.

Someone did videotape the play for the school, principal Andrew Thoms said.
