An event bringing people together to work toward common goals, to celebrate shared values, and to support one another regardless of differences is coming to Simms Park next weekend.
Habitat for Humanity Vancouver Island North (VIN), alongside nine partner organizations from the Comox Valley, are throwing a free, family friend event in Simms Park on June 7th, from 11am-2pm. The event will feature interactive booths, a live radio broadcast, and musical guests Café Olé and the Comox Pop-Up Choir led by Wendy Nixon Stothert with a 'Home' themed mash-up!
Visitors will have a chance to participate in a collaborative art project led by artist Sue McKitrick, visit the Kid’s Corner for fun and games, grab free snacks, and try their hand at one of 4 ReStore gift cards offered to the day’s Bingo winners.
As the lead organizer, Habitat VIN has partnered with Dawn to Dawn, Tibetan Bon Buddhist Society, Comox Valley Head Injury Society, Eureka Support Society, 4 R’s Education, I Belong - L’Arche Comox Valley, Immigrant Welcome Society, Comox Valley Coalition to End Homelessness, Vancouver Island Vocational and Rehabilitation Services (VIVRS). Together, they have put together an exciting program that is sure to engage and create connections across the Comox Valley community.
“It’s about fostering a sense of belonging, cooperation, and mutual respect, where everyone feels included and empowered to contribute to the well-being of the whole. Coming together and valuing each person’s unique strengths and perspectives, creating a stronger, more connected, and more compassionate community,” said Chrystal Arnet, Community Engagement and Events Manager for Habitat VIN.
The event is made possible through funding received from the Team Up Project. Team Up is a campaign to empower people to build connections across differences with others in their communities. It began as a part of the bipartisan United We Stand Summit at the White House in September 2022, which sought to bring people from diverse backgrounds together and create avenues for bridge building. Through tools, resources, and programming, the project aims to elevate and support ordinary acts of kindness, human connection and cooperation – and demonstrate that bridge building is an achievable and worthy pursuit that everyone should take part in. Habitat VIN was the only Canadian affiliate to receive funding for their proposal, and one of only 32 grantees selected for the second year of the Team Up Project.
