Grade 1 students raise over $500 for MARS Wildlife Rescue

Cumberland Community School students held bake sale to raise money for organization

A grade 1 class in Cumberland has raised over $500 for MARS Wildlife Rescue, inspired by a visit to the facility in June.

The class held the bake sale on Wednesday, June 11, and were able to bring in a total of $505 for the animal rescue organization. The class had a planned visit to the organization on June 13, and wanted to raise the money to support the organization.

"With help and contributions from all of the class families (including the Grade 1 class making treats the day before in class), we sold the treats during both recesses out in front of their classroom," a note from parent Emily Kennedy says.

Goods were priced at one dollar each, and were sold out within 45 minutes.

"The kids were so happy and proud to be able to contribute in such a positive way," Kennedy wrote. "They had spent a lot of time leading up to the trip learning about birds, doing special research projects and really taking time to acknowledge and notice them during their weekly nature walks in the local forests.
As parents, we are happy for them to be learning how a little effort from each individual can make a big impact when working together."

The kids in Ms. Stuckey's class presented a big cheque to MARS on Friday, after learning about the animals in the hospital and the good work MARS does for animals on the Island.
