The Ladysmith Public Works yard was a beehive of activity last Thursday, May 22.

The annual Public Works Day was far more popular than in previous years. Local day care facilities as well as the primary and other schools were in attendance all day long.

It’s always been a tough decision to estimate what was the most popular activity between the sandpile or the cake.

Youngsters and oldsters alike were given the opportunity to sit in dump trucks, the grader or backhoe and other equipment and also had an opportunity to chat with the RCMP who were in attendance, along with one of their emergency vehicles.

The event also featured equipment from the Ladysmith Fire/Rescue department and an exhibit and talk with volunteers from the local Search and Rescue squad.

Members of the town’s works and parks crews handed out cake and hot dogs to everyone and were on hand, all day, to explain the various programs and functions of the town’s public works.

It’s estimated that more than 300 people attended the day-long event.
