There’s room for two in the newest bed at Victoria Hospice.
The agency that provides end-of-life care focused on palliative treatment knows the value of a cuddle – offering emotional and physical comfort by creating a safe space for closeness and connection.
Purchased with a donation from the P.A. Woodward Foundation, the special bed expands to fit two people, allowing loved ones to lie side by side – whether during quiet visits, overnight stays or those deeply meaningful final moments together.
“Patients can experience increased anxiety as they approach the end of life,” said Adrienne a licensed practical nurse who sees the impact daily. “The comfort of having a loved one lying beside them has extraordinary therapeutic value.”
Moments of physical touch can help ease anxiety, support mental health and bring comfort to both patients and families. The bed is also suitable for bariatric patients helping provide inclusive and dignified care for everyone.
“It’s more than just a bed – it’s a space for closeness, calm and comfort. A heartfelt thank you to the P.A. Woodward Foundation for helping us bring even more compassion to end-of-life care,” Hospice said on social media.
The P.A.Woodward Foundation is named for its creator, owner of the longstanding Woodward’s Stores, a retail chain that operated for more than a century in B.C. and Alberta. The foundation has made more than 2,000 donations totalling more than $65 million to 500 health-care facilities across the province.
Victoria Hospice aims to enhance the quality of life for people and their families as they face life-limiting illness and death. The organization provides more than 1,500 home visits a year, runs 18 inpatient beds, and offers more than 2,000 individual counselling sessions. Half of its operating costs are funded through donations.
