A new TV series was shooting in Heiltsuk First Nation and Bella Bella May 21-28.
The series Ocean Warriors ~ Mission Ready, follows four First Nations on the B.C. coast that have joined together to form the independent Coastal Nations Coast Guard Auxiliary (CNCGA).
Teams of highly-trained Indigenous men and women are able to respond to emergencies along the remoted and rugged coastline, including places around Vancouver Island.
Shooting for the series will also be taking place Ahousaht, ‘Namgis, and Quatsino First Nations this month.
The documentary series for APTN and CHEK and was created, produced and directed by Steve Sxwithul’txw of Kwassen Productions.
The series is slated for 13 episodes in total, and each half-hour will feature the work of the search and rescue volunteers.
“Having this chance to showcase the work of these volunteer SAR rescuers is something as a producer I am very excited to highlight to our viewers. The beauty of these territories and communities cannot be measured. We are so grateful for this opportunity,” said Sxwithul’txw in a news release announcing the upcoming production.
The show promises to “take the viewer deep into the our First Nation communities where men and women train and prepare for the time they will be called upon to respond.”
“Ocean Warriors is a series about hope and heroism, tragedy and heartbreak,” states the producers in their release.
The also show aims to highlight connections to the community within the CNCGA teams.
CNCGA’s motto nobly proclaims: We are Coastal First Nations, saving lives at sea, and their ethos: Mission Ready.
