Sooke Fine Arts Society director steps aside

Jen Hayward takes over as executive director for Sooke Fine Arts Society

For many people in the local art community and beyond, the name Terrie Moore and the Sooke Fine Arts Society fit together like a canvas and easel.

Moore recently announced her retirement after serving as the Sooke Fine Arts Society (SFAS) executive director for the past six years

"Terrie is very proud of her Sooke roots, and she channelled that directly into the Sooke Fine Arts show, inspiring staff, volunteers and donors to pull this magnificent event together for six years," said Katherine Sutherland, president of SFAS board of directors. "And somehow she made it look easy! In her tenure as ED, Terrie made a lasting impact on the SFAS legacy."

Jen Hayward, who replaces Moore as SFAS executive director, also praised Moore for successfully guiding the organization through six exceptional shows, including during the pandemic, when the show pivoted online in 2020 and 2021.

“Terrie pioneered many new advancements, secured numerous arts grants, and fostered vital connections within the community,” Hayward noted, “She leaves behind a remarkable legacy, and I am honoured to build on that foundation to further support and champion the arts in our region."

Moore, who has an extensive background in communications and community relations, began her tenure with SFAS as a volunteer from 2006 to 2008.

My family has a strong connection and long history with the art show," she said. "My father, Vern Moore, was a volunteer with the first show in 1986. There's actually an award named after him. "

Moore said for her, personally, the Sooke Fine Arts Show has always been about the people.

"And that's not just the artists, but the many volunteers who work so hard behind the scenes to make the show a success," she said. "I also really enjoyed meeting the people who came to the show from across Canada and the U.S. Europe as well. That speaks to the quality of the artwork, and how the show has blossomed over 38 years."

Moore listed keeping the show going during the pandemic, and making the show and the artwork more accessible as highlights.

"I have every confidence that it's in good hands with Jen," she said.

When asked what her plans are, Moore said she's looking forward to spending more time with her family, music, and gardening.

"Although I'm more of an art appreciator than an artist, I've dabbled in stained glass designs, so I'm looking forward to having more time for that as well," she added.
