Spring Tea brings Oak Bay News readers together at Carlton House

The June 5 event gave readers a chance to connect with the paper's publisher while enjoying tasty treats

Oak Bay News readers gathered at Carlton House Thursday (June 5) for a chance to meet the people that make the paper run.

Locals met at the independent-living facility to chat with publisher Janet Gairdner about the publication that has kept them abreast on district news for 32 years.

I like the Oak Bay News,” said attendee Sylvia Nielsen. “I like that it’s local. It keeps me up on a number of things that are of interest to me.”

Many opted to lounge outside of the Oak Bay Avenue building in the heat of the sun, where harpist Gwyneth Evans performed calming tunes. It was there reader Ursula Horspool broke down what she loves most about the paper.

“It’s nice flipping through," she said. “You update us about what’s going on with the municipality."

Horspool explained her connection to the Oak Bay News runs deeper than most readers. She recalled delivering the publication door to door with her two sons 30 years ago – a task that often involved a furry friend.

“The neighbour’s dog, as soon as he saw us, would come, too,” she said.

Regular community camera contributor Diane Harris, who has perused the publication regularly since moving to the district three years ago, was also at the event.

“Everybody looks forward to getting the paper,” she said. “I would really miss it if it wasn’t around anymore.”

As attendees mingled over tea and snacks, Gairdner made sure to connect with those in the crowd.

“Keeping the community of Oak Bay informed has been an honour, and that’s why it was so great to meet all of our wonderful readers," she said. “Thanks everyone who came by – we couldn’t do this without you.”
