An annual swarm of soccer players and fans land at the Tyndall Park turf field Saturday (May 10) to support crucial end-of-life care in Victoria.
Young players may be out and about in the community sourcing pledges from friends and community ahead of the Anneswer to Cancer tournament traditionally held the Saturday before Mother’s Day.
When Brett Hyslop's mother Anne died at Victoria Hospice in 2010, he wanted to do something to thank the organization which had given so much to his mother and family. Hyslop's business partner in World Cup Soccer Camp, Steph Steiner, suggested they create a soccer fundraiser, founding Anneswer to Cancer the next year.
Since then, the event has grown substantially, this year filling the pitches at Tyndall and San Juan avenues with activity including the 12-team tournament, penalty shots, a radar machine, juggling contests, cut-throat keeper — and back by popular demand, an obstacle course challenge.
Registration is a noon, with activities from 1 to 5 p.m.
Victoria Hospice provides more than 1,500 home visits and more than 2,000 individual counselling sessions a year. Half of the non-profit’s annual operating costs are funded by donations.
