Parksville students present 'Grease' musical for 6 nights

Performances start at 7 p.m., beginning Feb. 18

Get ready for the classic songs of the musical Grease this February at Ballenas Secondary School in Parksville.

The musical romantic comedy, set in 1958, revolves around the lives of transfer student Sandy Olsson and "greaser" Danny Zuko who fall in love the summer before Grade 12.

The play includes hits such as 'Hopelessly Devoted to You' and 'You're the One That I Want'  that topped the charts when the film was released in 1978.

Lina Janeski plays Sandy, the new girl at Rydell High School.

"She is really sweet and innocent," Janeski said. "She's just met Danny over the summer and when she sees him at school she decides that she kind of needs to fit in with his crowd. So, she kind of changes herself for him towards the end — turns into more of a bad girl."

Janeski is in Grade 12 and has acted in several plays, including a few lead roles, at both the school and with ECHO Players in Qualicum Beach.

"I love performing," she said. "I love seeing people's faces when certain things happen in the play and also evoking emotion from people"

Grade 11 student Ethan Liedl plays Danny Zuko, Sandy's high school sweetheart and all-around "cool kid".

"He's like every high school jock," Liedl said. "The guy that everybody else follows and is in charge, essentially."

This will be his fourth play at BSS and he's been enjoying performing in lead roles since Grade 8.

"It's mostly for the applause," Liedl added. "I think that's what all the actors do it for."

The play runs Feb. 18, Feb. 19, Feb. 20, Feb. 25, Feb. 26 and Feb. 27 at the Whalebone Theatre in BSS.

Performances start at 7 p.m.

The musical is directed by Doug Campbell.

Tickets are $15 and are available through the Ballenas Secondary’s online store.
