How far would you go to save face?
Lies, deceit, even murder? ECHO Players' current production of 'Deathtrap' plunges you headlong into that dangerous dilemma with an intricate plot that's part drama, part comedy. Filled with shocking twists and turns, it remains an exceptional audience thriller, even after Ira Levin's wicked pen first brought it to the stage nearly 50 years ago.
Recognized as one of the biggest hits on Broadway, Levin successfully weaves all the elements of thrillers and horror stories into one brilliant and sinister tale.
Fictional playwright Sidney Bruhl with a stream of past successes, has hit a long dry spell spiralling him downward into a deep depression. But he sees his way out of failure when Clifford, one of his talented summer students shows up with a stunning example of playwright brilliance and he develops a devious plot to claim fame for himself. Will his fixation with those implements of death on display play a part?
Deathtrap's dizzying twists and turns will have you leaping out of your seat.
Witty dialogue within a complex script brings to life the fascinating character of Sidney Bruhl, exceptionally played by veteran actor Jay Newman, new to Vancouver Island and ECHO Players. Dawna Silver is perfectly cast as his loving, devoted wife who professes her loyalty no matter their financial circumstances. What will that cost her?
Seasoned actor Thommy Hutson is young playwright Clifford Anderson, full of fresh enthusiasm, invited for the weekend to the couple's country retreat. Kevin Dean's love of theatre comes to life in his supporting role as Porter Milgrim. Judy Hipkin bursts onto the scene in all the colourful drama of her psychic character, clairvoyant Helga ten Dorp, declaring visions of terrible pain.
Director Rob Atkinson says: "'Deathtrap' is two-thirds thriller and one-third comedy. This play has been a real joy to work on and the cast and crew have definitely put in the time and hard work to make for a very entertaining evening. We hope to keep you laughing while keeping you on the edge of your seat. The story has great moments between the characters giving audiences plenty of insight into the human condition.
