Youth from Sooke academy heat up the stage in the musical Frozen Jr.

Sooke's youngest actors bring their rendition of Frozen to the stage June 13 and 14

Sooke’s youth are beating the heat with the coolest theatrical performance of the year.

Frozen Jr. is the latest musical from the Amber Academy Youth Fine Arts Society – coming to the Sooke Community Theatre this June.

Amber Academy describes it as, “A heartwarming journey filled with magic, music, and the power of true love,”

The 60-minute performance is based on Disney's smash 2013 hit Frozen, and the subsequent 2018 Broadway adaptation.

Frozen Jr. presents a new spin on the modern classic. Now adapted for young performers, the musical will feature renditions of Love Is an Open Door, Do You want to Build a Snowman? and Let It Go, as well as some newer songs pulled from the Broadway adaptation.

The cast will feature 26 students in total, ranging in age from 7-14, who’ve worked for months to bring the magical tale to life.

“Directing this incredible young cast as they connect deeply with the story and their characters has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life,” said Paul Holmes, the production’s director and acting instructor at Amber Academy.

“Unlike so many Disney shows, the hero in Frozen Jr. is not a handsome prince. The love story is not about a kiss from a stranger. Instead, the story is that of a loving bond between sisters that overcomes immeasurable tragedy and adversity. It’s about mended family relationships, and sacrificial love. Things the world needs a lot more of in 2025.”

Hannah Little, 13, will star in the lead role of Elsa.

"Ever since I was a toddler, I fell in love with the Frozen soundtrack and knew all the songs by heart,” said Little.

“I wore my Elsa dress day and night. I am so excited to now get to perform as Elsa in Frozen Jr. It feels like the opportunity of a lifetime!"

The show will also star Hanna Warbrick, 12, as Young Elsa. Lily Mitchell, 13, will take on the role of Anna alongside her younger sister Grace Mitchell, who portrays young Anna. Finally, the role of Olaf will be portrayed by 13-year-old Melody Heal.

“Being in the Frozen Jr. production is a lot of fun!” said Heal.

“It’s nice working with other people and meeting new friends. Being Olaf is a fun role and experience. Acting has really helped me to come out of my shell. I’m way more comfortable singing and dancing now.”

Whether you’re a longtime fan of Frozen or discovering it for the first time, Amber Academy assures Frozen Jr. is an unforgettable experience for all.

The cast will take the stage at Sooke Community Theatre for shows on June 13 at 7 p.m. and June 14 at 2 and 7 p.m.

Ticket prices start at $13 and are available at Forbes Pharmacy Sooke or online at https://amberacademy.ca/events/. Remaining tickets may be available at the door.
