A three-vehicle collision on Highway 97 resulted in no fatalities on Monday, June 10.

This call was one of 126 calls for service the 100 Mile House RCMP responded to between June 4-10 last week. Sgt. Brian Lamb said the collision occurred on Highway 97 near Wutke Road in the afternoon.

Upon arrival, Lamb said officers found a blue pick-up truck upside down in the northbound ditch, a green jeep blocking both lanes of travel and a red pick-up truck with an attached fishing trailer also blocking both lanes of travel. All vehicles had sustained severe damage.

"After speaking with witnesses and drivers it was determined the blue pickup was travelling southbound on Highway 97 when it suddenly veered into the northbound lane of travel at a crest of a hill which struck the northbound jeep on the driver's side," Lamb said. "The truck towing the boat and trailer which was also heading northbound attempted to swerve to miss both vehicles but contacted the jeep and other truck before stopping approximately 200 meters from where the vehicles first made contact. The blue pickup ended up in the northbound ditch and rolled on its roof."

After the collision, Lamb said the driver of the truck that overturned was able to self-extract themselves and was taken to hospital with unknown injuries that were believed to be non-life threatening. The drivers of the other vehicles received minor injuries.

Traffic was briefly interrupted through the area while the scene was cleared. Lamb said the investigation into this incident remains ongoing.

Impaired drivers apprehended

On June 4, 2024, RCMP received a report of a possible impaired driver on the 400 block of Highway 97. BC Highway Patrol located the vehicle in a parking lot and stopped it.

Lamb said the driver made admissions to consuming alcohol and a breath test was completed using an approved screening device. The result was in a range where the driver could not legally operate the vehicle. The driver was issued a 24-hour suspension from driving and the vehicle was towed.

Three days later on June 7 officers received a report of another possible impaired driver on Horse Lake Road driving towards 100 Mile House. RCMP were directed to the location by the caller and located the driver.

Lamb said the driver allegedly showed symptomology of alcohol consumption and a breath test was conducted The result was a fail. The driver was issued an immediate roadside prohibition from driving for 90 days and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

Fuel theft

Lamb said that on June 5 RCMP responded to a report of mischief and theft of fuel from a vehicle on the 4000 block of Canim Hendrix Lake Road. Sometime after midnight, the vehicle's gas tank was drilled into and its fuel drained.

Also on Thursday officers responded to a report of lost property along Forest Service Road between Valentine Lake Exeter Station Road. Lamb said that a camper who was camping in the area reported that his RV door came open while travelling down the road and numerous items fell out.

These included a Stihl chainsaw in an orange case, a fishing case with fly rods, Scotty Rod holders, a Scotty anchor mount, a boat seat, two sets of oars, a black umbrella, and a safety rope.

Motorcycle collisions

"A street motorcycle was observed in the ditch and the operator of the motorcycle was being treated for injuries.," Lamb said. "The cause of the collision was unknown but impairment and speed were not believed to be a factor. "

The operator of the motorcycle was taken to hospital with serious injuries believed to be non-life threatening.

The next day on Sunday, June 9 RCMP were advised of another collision involving a motorcycle on Watch Lake Road. Lamb said a group of motorcycle riders were driving on Watch Lake Road when several cattle ran across the road in front of them. As a result, one of the motorcyclists struck a cow.

"The operator of the motorcycle reported some minor injuries and damage to his motorcycle but did not require EHS," Lamb said. "Police attempted to locate the cattle but they had left the area. There were no reported known injuries to the cow."
