BMXers from across the continent will descend on Nanaimo to compete at an international meet.

The Nanaimo BMX Association will host a BMX Canada national series event at the Marie Davidson BMX Park from Friday to Sunday, July 4-6, with the national-calibre competition expected to draw hundreds of elite BMX riders "for a weekend of adrenaline-fuelled racing and community celebration," noted a club press release.

Participants will compete in a number of age and skill classes, with points counting toward national standings and international event qualification.

The track was refurbished recently, thanks to $1.9 million from the federal and provincial governments and the association. The facility featuring a new surface and hydraulic start gate, and the upgrades make it one of the top-tier tracks on this side of Canada, according to the press release, and the event illustrates the association's "growth, community support, and the legacy of those who have built BMX in Nanaimo."

“This is a major moment for our club and our city,” said Cameron Stanley, association vice-president, in the release. “We’re honoured to host a national event and showcase both our incredible new track and the spirit of our BMX community.”

In addition to the races, there will be a concession stand, vendors and entertainment. Admission is free for spectators.
