Editor:

On May 2, the Valley Taxpayers’ Alliance (VTA) hand delivered a letter to the CCRD with a list of 10 questions. Unfortunately, when we submitted the letter to the superfastbody we were restricted to 350 words and therefore not able to submit all our questions. Refer to May 9 edition.

These are the remaining questions:

8. Has the CCRD considered incineration or plasma pyrolysis/gasification as an alternative to trucking or barging our garbage to another location?

9. Is the onus to raise the $5 million on the taxpayers alone, as we represent less than half the population of the valley and therefore less than half of the landfill usage?

10. The bailer compactor that the CCRD operates at its recycling depot does not produce a marketable size bail, as a result, we burn all our commercial cardboard. Cardboard is the one recyclable material that can actually show a profit. Through some research, the Valley Taxpayers’ Alliance (VTA) has been in contact with a U.S. company, who builds bailer compactors and whose business model, is to set up, at no initial cost, but takes revenues from the recycled materials until the machine is paid off. If the VTA pursues this further, would the CCRD consider it as an option to burning our most valuable recyclable?

We look forward to sharing the results,

Chris Matthews,

Chairman, Bella Coola

Valley Taxpayers’ Alliance
