Boardrooms to banjos: Keith Alessi brings hit show to Chemainus

International touring show 'Tomatoes Tried to Kill Me but Banjos Saved My Life' makes a stop at Chemainus Theatre, with all proceeds supporting the festival

What began as a six-performance experiment has grown into a hit show and a million-dollar fundraiser. Now it will be making a stop in Chemainus from Feb. 27 to March 8.

The Chemainus Theatre will welcome performer Keith Alessi and his award-winning, globe-touring show Tomatoes Tried to Kill Me But Banjos Saved My Life as part of the theatre’s Cabaret series.

Alessi shares his exceptional true story of leaving the world of corporate boardrooms behind to follow his long-buried passion — playing the banjo. When faced with a deadly cancer battle, his musical pursuit took him on a journey that became the key to saving his life.

Told through authentic storytelling, heartfelt humour and memorable music, this show is an uplifting story of challenge, triumph and the power of positivity.

The show’s director, Erika Conway, said it's been an “absolute privilege” to be a part of bringing this story to the stage.

“Keith is an entertaining and dynamic storyteller but it's his bravery, authenticity and vulnerability on stage that hold the real power to this piece,” Conway said.

Alessi has toured the show internationally including two sold-out runs at the prestigious Edinburgh Fringe Festival. He’s turned Tomatoes Tried to Kill Me But Banjos Saved My Life into more than a show. It’s a cause. The show has donated 100 per cent of artist fees to cancer, community, music and theatre charities, raising more than $1 million (CAD). All proceeds from this run will benefit the Chemainus Theatre Festival.

This intimate experience, performed in the Playbill Dining Room, promises to leave you feeling empowered, inspired and ready to dust off your own long-forgotten dreams. Tickets for Tomatoes Tried to Kill Me But Banjos Saved My Life are now on sale and can be purchased through the Chemainus Theatre Festival’s website.
