The second in the Twilight Concert Series will feature Phil Dwyer and Friends for an evening of bossa nova and samba compositions in Qualicum Beach on July 12.
The concert, organized by the St. Andrews Lodge Historical and Cultural Society (SALHACS) will see the five highly accomplished musicians perform at the scenic waterfront setting of Saahtlam Park, according to a news release by the society.
Dwyer and his trio (bassist Ken Lister and guitarist Andrew Janusson) will be joined by Brazilian master percussionist Maninho Costa and will play music from composers like Antonio Carlos Jobim, Luis Bonfa and Sergio Mendes — perfect for a summer evening by the sea.
Dwyer is a Member of the Order of Canada and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Conservatory of Music. He has performed on a dozen Juno Award-winning recordings, and has appeared at some of the most prestigious venues and festivals in over 30 countries on four continents.
Costa, was born in Rio de Janeiro and from the early age of eight he learned to play all the drums in the baterias of the famous Rio Carnival. At the age of 15 he began to play in the adult baterias and was invited to record with professional percussionists.
In 2001, Costa was invited to go to Canada to perform for a large annual fundraising gala called the Brazilian Carnival Ball. He ended up making a new home in Toronto, began to give samba percussion workshops, formed his own samba group called Batucada Carioca, and played with a “who’s who” from Canada’s jazz, classical, and world music communities.
The concert will include special guest vocalist Teighan Couch of Nanoose, a powerhouse jazz vocalist and composer known for her impressive vocal range and knack for scat. With sold-out shows across the coast, she brings swing, soul, and sharp lyricism to the stage.
The concert gets under way at 7 p.m. at Saahtlam Park, located at 3319 Island Hwy W.
Admission is by donation, with a suggested minimum of $10 per person.
Once the musicians are paid all proceeds go toward the continuing restoration of historic St. Andrews Lodge. Those planning to attend should bring their own chair, blanket and dancing shoes.
