Nominations are being sought to appoint someone to represent the central coast on the B.C. Ferry Authority (BCFA) board of directors.

At its regular meeting Thursday, Jan. 25, the Central Coast Regional District received a request from B.C. Ferries and decided to seek nominations and advertise the call for nominations in the Bella Coola Valley, Denny Island, Bella Bella and Oceans Falls.

During the Feb. 22 regular board meeting a single candidate will be chosen by the board and staff to forward by the March 1, 2024 deadline.

The board of the BCFA has nine directors and four are appointed from nominees of the 14 coastal regional districts. One represents the North Coast, Kitimat-Stikine, Central Coast and Mount Waddington regional districts.

Presently former Northcoast MLA Gary Coons is the area’s rep on the board and his term ends March 31, 2024.

A person nominated for appointment to the authority board must be over the age of 18 and a qualified authority candidate as defined in the Coastal Ferry Act.

Specifically, this means an individual who does not hold elected public office of any type; is not an employee, steward, officer, director, elected official or member of any union representing employees of BC Ferries; is not an employee of a municipality, regional district, trust council or greater board within the appointment area; and is not an employee, director, officer or executive of BC Ferries.

The board meets at least four times a year in coastal communities served by the ferries, in Vancouver or virtually.

Directors also attend the annual BCFA annual general meeting held when there is an annual public meeting with BC Ferries.

Directors receive an annual honorarium of $6,250 and a fee of $1,200 for each regular meeting or $600 for each teleconference or meeting of short duration of the board attended.

Directors are also entitled to reimbursement of reasonable travel-related expenses incurred on BCFA business.
