Guns and drugs were seized by members of the BC Highway Patrol near 100 Mile House on Sunday, Jan. 28

The seizure took place after highway patrol members stopped a vehicle travelling on Highway 97 near Exeter Station Road after officers observed several defects with the vehicle. While speaking with the driver and passenger, police noticed a fire arm stored in the side door compartment area.

Both the driver, a 36-year old male from Ontario, and the passenger, a 42-year-old female from the 100 Mile House area, were arrested for weapons offenses on the scene. After searching the vehicle officers found approximately 30 grams of methamphetamine, a large quantity of opioids in pill form, two rifles, a BB gun and ammunition.

Officers also found several cartons of cigarettes they believe to be illegal and a bag containing ski masks, ropes, gloves and blunt instruments. Both the driver and passenger were released and will attend a later court date. Their vehicle has been impounded.

In a separate incident on Monday, another vehicle with obvious defects led to a brief chase through 100 Mile House. 100 Mile House RCMP officers were patrolling in the 500 block of Cedar Avenue and observed the vehicle, noting its condition and the lack of valid insurance. A 55-year-old man known to the police was seen nearby and denied ownership of the vehicle.

Shortly afterward officers observed that same man driving the vehicle on Cedar Avenue. Rather than stop for police the man fled with the vehicle before abandoning it, still in drive, on Dogwood Avenue. The unoccupied vehicle then crashed into a parked vehicle causing damage.

RCMP chased the driver on foot and eventually found him at the front door of a home on Dogwood, where he was taken into custody without further incident. He remains in custody pending a bail hearing. Charges including flight from police, failure to remain at the scene of an accident, driving while prohibited and the dangerous operation of a motor vehicle have been proposed against him. The driver also has a lifetime prohibition from driving as a result of a previous driving-related conviction.

Outside of vehicle-related crimes, the RCMP also received a report of another online fraud last week. The victim of the incident was viewing a local Facebook group when they came across a job advertisement for a clerical position from home.

After corresponding with the fraudster, the victim received a cheque for $1,000 they were asked to cash in exchange for Apple gift cards. Growing suspicious the victim checked with their bank and learned the cheque was a fake.

RCMP said that while there was no real job the fraudster(s) had gone out of their way to appear legitimate by using a Facebook account impersonating a real out-of-province business. The community is once more reminded to exercise caution while online.

Anyone with further information on these incidents is asked to call the 100 Mile House RCMP at 250-395-2456 or anonymously at 1-800-222- TIPS (8477).
