Go By Bike Week is back to celebrate spring and build anticipation for summer cycling in Nanaimo.
This year’s events spin up Sunday, June 2, with a kick-off event at Maffeo Sutton Park. Participants are asked to bring a used bike to donate, if they can, and enjoy free pizza. The event is a chance to connect with Nanaimo’s cycling vendors and discover new local bike services, noted a city press release. Evolve E-bikes will also be on hand for free demonstrations.
Throughout the week, June 3-8, celebration stations will be set up at various locations around town and hosted by sponsors handing out refreshments, cycling swag and performing minor repairs, so commuters are encouraged to plan biking routes to stop by the stations and enter to win prizes, including a cycling adventure in Italy.
Celebration stations will be at the following locations:
Monday, June 3, 7:30-9:30 a.m. at Metral Drive at Mostar Road; June 4, 4-6 p.m. at Lower Colliery Dam; June 5, 7:30-9:30 a.m. at the E&N Trail across from Brooks Landing; June 6, 4-6 p.m. at the Stevie Smith Bike Park; June 7, 4-6 p.m. at Front Street at Museum Way; and June 8, 3-5 p.m. at Westwood Lake Park.
Spring Go By Bike wraps up with the Pride Parade on June 9. Cyclists who wish to participate can meet at 9:30 a.m. to decorate a bike and get into the queue for the parade at 11 a.m.
Nanaimo has celebrated travelling by bike since 1997, starting with Bike to Work Week until the event name was changed by the province in 2018 to Go By Bike to celebrate all the reasons to ride a bike.
