The nominees are (clockwise from top left) the Bewick’s wren, the Cooper’s hawk, the northern flicker, and the great horned owl.

Saanich residents are invited to help select the municipality’s official bird through a community contest organized by the municipality and Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary.

The four nominees – Bewick’s wren, Cooper’s hawk, great horned owl, and northern flicker – were chosen for being native to North America, year-round residents in Victoria and not previously named official birds elsewhere.

Voting is open online (shorturl.at/4D85S) or in person at several locations, including the Swan Lake Nature House, Saanich Municipal Hall, Cedar Hill Golf Course and area recreation centres.

Ballots will be accepted until June 7, with the winning bird announced June 12 at the Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary’s annual general meeting and on local social media channels.
