A farm market on Jingle Pot Road is expanding options for residents to find locally produced food and more.
The Nanaimo Food Hub farm market started up for another summer and will continue every Friday afternoon from 4-7 p.m. at Discover Montessori School at 3460 Jingle Pot Rd.
The market is a collaboration between the school and Nanaimo Food Hub and features a variety of offerings including local vegetables and berries, ethically raised meat, baked goods, flower bouquets, honey, apple juice, and coffee beans, according to a Nanaimo Food Hub press release. Vendors include local businesses as well as school farms from Discover Montessori and Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools Learning Alternatives
Nanaimo Food Hub is an organization dedicated to supporting local farmers and is working to establish a year-round farmers’ marketplace to promote food security and reduce food waste.
"[Discover Montessori Farm School’s] active involvement in food cultivation throughout the seasons makes them an ideal collaborator for the Friday Farm Market. Engaging students in the process of growing food is essential for nurturing future generations of farmers," said Tina Fabbro, co-founder of Nanaimo Food Hub co-founder, in the press release.
Rhianna Solomon, Nanaimo Food Hub co-founder and farmer, said she understands the challenge of marketing and distributing goods without organizational support.
“Our community of farmers needs more support. We all win when we connect producers and consumers on a local level. That's why I am doing this,” she said in the release.
Fabbro, in an e-mail, noted that more vendor booths will be added for this week's market on Friday, July 11.
