Greater Victoria residents are being giving the heads-up that low-flying helicopters are on the way.

FortisBC will be carrying out its annual inspection of high-pressure transmission natural gas lines during daylight hours,

Authorized by Transport Canada, Talon Helicopters with LaSen Inc. will perform low-level flyovers between May 14 to June 14. The helicopters will use aerial LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology to check the pipelines for leaks.

"This technology is used to detect any issues to ensure FortisBC’s system continues to operate safely, reliably and to plan maintenance activities accordingly," said the natural gas provider in a news release.

Inspections are also taking place in 23 regions across the province until June 14.

FortisBC says there will be no activity on the ground related to flights and that the schedule may vary depending on weather conditions and wildfires.
