The Town of Qualicum Beach and Qualicum School District have finalized a lease agreement to allow the Qualicum Commons to continue operations.
A joint press release stated "this initiative builds on the strong relationship between the two parties and their shared interest in enhancing community services and social vibrancy."
Qualicum Commons, formerly Qualicum Beach Elementary School, has long been a vital part of the town, the release said, noting the town and school district recognize the importance of the existing tenants and the valuable community services offered at Qualicum Commons. These services, which include a diversity of educational programs, recreational activities and services, play a crucial role in the well-being of the community.
“Collaborating with the town allows the Qualicum School District to focus on its core mandate of education while seeking to keep a vibrant, accessible space for recreation, culture, and social services at the Qualicum Commons," said Eve Flynn, district board chair. "We are pleased that this site can continue to provide those opportunities within the town.”
Beginning July 1 the town will assume responsibility for the building and surrounding grounds through a one‑year lease, with options for future renewals. This structure ensures uninterrupted programming while the town and community partners collaborate on planning for long‑term stewardship and capital upgrades.
“This agreement gives us the opportunity to strengthen partnerships and support current tenants, while setting the stage for the Qualicum Commons to thrive as a community space for generations to come," said Mayor Teunis Westbroek.
