Longtime Abbotsford School District secretary-treasurer Ray Velestuk is departing his role in Abbotsford.

The Abbotsford School District has announced that longtime secretary-treasurer Ray Velestuk is moving on.

Velestuk had served in the role for the past 15 years and has accepted a job with the Surrey School District.

According to a press release from the district, Velstuk was instrumental in his management of the district’s finances with and provided leadership in operations and financial planning.

His final public board meeting occurred on Tuesday (April 15) and it saw several people share his contributions to the district and the value he brought to the job.

"Thank you all for the kind words," he said at his final board meeting. "It's been a wonderful 15 years. I've really enjoyed the working relationships I've made with staff and trustees over that time. I wish nothing but the best for this district and I think you'll continue to be one of the top performing school districts in this province."

Board chair Shirley Wilson said it will be a big loss to Abbotsford.

"We are deeply grateful to Mr. Velestuk for his outstanding contributions over the past 15 years,” stated Shirley Wilson, chair of the Abbotsford board of education. “His leadership, professionalism, deep understanding of public education finance, and a clear focus on students have made a lasting impact. While we are sad to see him go, we wish him all the best in his new role."

The district said that a search for his replacement has begun and that deputy superintendent Nathan Ngieng will take on the secretary-treasurer responsibilities until a new candidate has been selected.

"We are grateful for deputy superintendent Ngieng’s willingness to support the district during this transition,” stated Sean Nosek superintendent of schools. “His deep knowledge of our system and strong relationships across the organization will serve us well as we continue our work."

Velestuk's first official day in Surrey is April 22.
