The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) is restricting non-essential water use in Grindrod, effective immediately.
Starting Friday, May 16, outdoor water conservation measures are in effect for Grindrod Water customers. The measures are in place because of the impacts of spring run-off at the Grindrod Water Treatment Plant.
"Melting snow has resulted in an increased presence of particles in the water like clay and silt (turbidity) that enter the Treatment Plant," the RDNO said in a release Friday afternoon.
When turbidity arises, operators slow the rate at which raw water passes through treatment processes so the plant can still effectively filter out particles and disinfect the drinking water, the regional district said.
"Since less water can move through the plant, restrictions on non-essential water uses are important."
The water conservation measures allow Grindrod residents to water outdoors with sprinklers according to a schedule based on their street address.
Residents with an even house address can water with sprinklers on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Those with an odd address can do so Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. No watering with sprinklers is allowed on Mondays.
Residents can water any time by hand with a watering can or a hose with a spring-loaded shut-off nozzle. Drip irrigation is also allowed any time, as evaporation is minimal when the water is applied directly to plant roots.
