It was the perfect day to host a comic book convention in Nanaimo.
Curious Comicon is being held at Country Club Centre on Saturday, May 4, a day observed by Star Wars fans (May the fourth), and on Free Comic Book Day.
Rob McKee, non-profit Curious Comicon Convention Society board member, said organizers were blown away with the turnout. As of 11:30 a.m. it was estimated that over 1,000 people had come to the convention. He projected 4,000 by day’s end.
Nanaimo Brain Injury Society was the beneficiary of the event and McKee was hoping that $5,000 would be raised.
The event was bittersweet, as it also paid tribute to late organizer Mike Drummond, who died in January. He was the “heart and soul” of Curious Comicon, McKee said.
“This one’s for Mike for sure … Darth Vader was probably his favourite Star Wars character, but his favourite comic character was Moon Knight,” said McKee. “For this year, we made shirts with ‘Moon Mike.’ The artist Julien Pilon made [the] design.”
Curious Comicon is on until 5 p.m. today.
