100 Mile House RCMP responded to 83 calls for service between Feb. 26 and March, including an incident where a man was hospitalized after being run over by a vehicle on Highway 97.

Sgt. Brian Lamb of the 100 Mile RCMP said that injury incident took place on Highway 97 at Alder Avenue last Friday. Both 100 Mile House RCMP and BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) responded to the scene. On arrival officer determined that two males had gotten into an argument.

Lamb said when the driver stopped, the passenger had exited the vehicle and as the car drove away attempted to get back inside. The passenger fell and was run over by the vehicle. The driver stopped immediately and was cooperative with the police. The passenger suffered unknown injuries to his lower extremities and was transported to the Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops.

The driver’s story was corroborated by witness testimony and local surveillance footage. No charges are anticipated at this time.

At the beginning of the week on March 3, 100 Mile RCMP received information from the Clinton RCMP about a vehicle involved in a hit and run. RCMP officers later located the vehicle on Cedar Avenue with three male occupants inside. Lamb said the driver was found to have signs of alcohol consumption and was detained.

A subsequent search of the vehicle located two firearms and ammunition leading to both passengers also being arrested.

Lamb said upon searching the vehicle’s occupants, officers found a concealed knife hidden in the driver’s wrist bracelet and ammunition he was prohibited from possessing. One of the other passengers, meanwhile, was found to be carrying a knife and a set of brass knuckles. The final man admitted to possessing one of the firearms, despite having no license to own it.

Lamb said the driver was issued a 24-hour suspension from driving and will be facing firearms and other weapons-related charges. A male passenger will be facing charges of possession of a prohibited device. The additional male passenger will be facing firearms related charges, he said, adding the incident remains under investigation.

In the last week of February, RCMP also responded to several other vehicle-related incidents.

On Feb. 27 officers responded to reports of a person smoking in a vehicle with a child under 16 inside near the 108 Mile Ranch. Based on the information provided by the complainant, who witnessed the event, a fine of $109 was issued for violating the Motor Vehicle Act.

The next day RCMP were patrolling Highway 97 near Alder Avenue where they observed a vehicle traveling at 110 km and hour in a 50 km an-hour zone. Officers stopped the vehicle and issued a speeding ticket and impounded the vehicle for seven days.

On Thursday, Feb. 29 RCMP responded to two single-vehicle motor vehicle collisions. The first incident occurred on Highway 97 near Hyra Road. It was determined the driver had lost control of his vehicle and drove into the wrong lane of traffic and into the ditch.

Lamb said while open liquor was found in the vehicle the driver, who was uninjured, was found to have below the legal limit of alcohol in his system. He was charged with speed relative to the conditions while the highway was closed for 90 minutes as the vehicle was removed.

Later on that day, RCMP responded to a charter bus that had gone off the road into the ditch near Ainsworth Road on Highway 97. The bus had been traveling northbound before losing control in the icy conditions, hitting a power pole and then sliding into the ditch. The driver suffered no injuries and the bus was empty at the time of the incident.

On March 1, 2024, BC Highway Patrol were conducting a check stop on Horse Lake Road. Lamb said a vehicle was stopped where a new driver was believed to have consumed alcohol. A breath demand was issued and subsequent breath test for alcohol was completed. The driver was not over any legal limit but was in contravention of class 7 license restrictions which requires no blood alcohol content. The driver was issued a 12-hour suspension from driving and the vehicle was towed.

Also on March 1, BC Highway Patrol were conducting a patrol on Highway 97 near Hyra Road. A vehicle was stopped and it was determined that a female occupant inside the vehicle was wanted on an outstanding warrant from Clinton, Lamb said. The female was arrested and subsequently released to attend court at a later date.
