Council members from Parksville and Qualicum Beach are attending the Union of BC Municipalities' annual convention in Vancouver through Sept. 20.
Parksville Mayor Doug O'Brien, along with councillors Mary Beil, Joel Grenz, Sylvia Martin and Sean Wood are at the convention, according to the City of Parksville.
Council members did not bring a resolution with them, according to the city, but a Parksville resolution from this year's Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities (AVICC) convention has been advanced to the UBCM for consideration.
'Implementing Accessibility BC Act Recommendations' resolves the UBCM request the provincial government create an annual funding model designed to assist local governments to implement accessibility recommendations.
The Accessible British Columbia Act, passed by the province in 2021, requires local governments to develop accessibility plans to identify, remove and prevent barriers.
Parksville council also voted to support a grant application by Parksville Fire Rescue to the UBCM Community Emergency Preparedness Fund for funding of the Meiko Low Temperature Self Contained Breathing Apparatus andPersonal Protective Equipment Multi-Washer.
Beil brought a notice of motion to council's Sept. 4 meeting.
“I hope that everyone will support this. The tools that are required by our volunteer and staff firefighters are very, very important," she said.
All members of Qualicum Beach town council are attending the convention.
The UBCM provides an opportunity for local governments of all sizes to meet, share their experiences and take a united position on issues, according to the UBCM's website.
