A massive downtown infrastructure project is in its final stages of development.

The Town of Princeton held its committee of the whole meeting on June 11 and discussed the progress of the Bridge Street Plaza revitalization. The finance department also provided a year-to-date financial information summary of the project for the rest of council to review.

The project was initiated in response to the 2021 flooding events and was aimed to help the community heal by transforming the area into a vibrant hub for both residents and tourists.

"The vision was to create a welcoming environment where people could socialize and enjoy outdoor gatherings and musical events throughout the year," Director of Economic Development Gary Schatz stated.

Princeton's Economic Development Department applied for a Canada Community Revitalization Fund Grant in September of 2021 and received funding of $750,000 towards the Visitor Centre boardwalk test strip, municipal campground improvements and sidewalk improvements in the downtown area. The federal government authorized $200,000 of the grant to include the Bridge Street Plaza project. The town contributed $150,000, bringing the total pre-flood project budget to $900,000.

Donations also went towards funding, with $56,000 from the Red Cross and $50,000 from the Salvation Army.

After an 18-month setback during construction involving architectural standards and fire safety, as well as subsequent delays of foundation and retaining wall problems, the project is now nearing completion, with a focus on prioritizing safety, accessibility, functionality and community engagement in the final design. The project is planned to be open for the Canada Day weekend.

The total cost of the project amounts to $443,218.90, which includes:

  • $186,334.72 for band shell
  • $119.850.10 for labour, electrical, architecture, lot consolidation and miscellaneous
  • $70,290.08 for furniture
  • $66,744 for shade sails

"Overall, funding for the Princeton Bridge Street Plaza project was carefully structured to incorporate a diverse range of financial resources, including municipal budgets, government grants, and generous community donations," Schatz stated. "This multifaceted approach not only supported the development needs of the plaza but also underscored the collaborative spirit and shared commitment to enhancing Princeton's community spaces for the benefit of all residents and visitors."
