Looking to stock up on summer reading material while supporting a worthy cause?

The Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) Saanich Peninsula is holding its annual book sale on May 23 at the Mary Winspear Centre from 1:30 to 5 p.m.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the event, which has raised over $55,000 for the organization’s Education Trust Fund.

The fund provides scholarships to young women graduating from four Peninsula high schools and those attending the University of Victoria or Camosun College.

This year's beneficiaries include Andrea Sam from the Snuneymuxw First Nation of Nanaimo, who received the Indigenous Award at Camosun College.

"The Peninsula is a solid, book-loving community, full of over 100 book clubs and diligent readers of all ages,” says Betsy Ives, chair of the event. “You can’t beat the prices – $1 to $10 – and in addition to yourself, you may be looking for gifts as well.”

The book sale features a wide selection of gently used books published in recent years, all in very good condition. Attendees can expect to find everything from fiction and non-fiction to children's books and more.

Well-known author and CFUW member Lorna Crozier, author of 25 books and an Officer of the Order of Canada, highlights the enduring value of reading.

“If you have a book in your hands, no matter your age, you’re a lifelong learner," she says.

"When you buy one of our books, you get the pleasure of a good read, and then, you pass that pleasure on by supporting a student. Her life will be enriched by what she also discovers in the pages of a book in her classes this fall. And long after. Book to book to book, and so the learning continues and grows.”
