A alternative for crossing the Sicamous Narrows will soon set sail for pedestrians and cyclists.

A free pedestrian ferry transport service will be launching on Wednesday, July 2, transporting foot and cycle traffic (up to 12 passengers) between the west end of Finlayson Street, Beach Park and the west side of the Narrows where the Shuswap North Okanagan Rail Trail begins.

The service is being run by the recently formed Sicamous Ferry Society (SFS), and will operate daily, initially from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., until September.

“We built this ferry with a vision to create yet another unique and memorable experience for anyone who explores our region,” said SFS chair Mike Miltimore in a June 23 District of Sicamous news release. “It’s Sicamous craftsmanship with a purpose.”

With the ongoing Bruhn Bridge construction along Highway 1, and the related closure of the sidewalk from the downtown to Beach Park, the district said the ferry offers a practical solution.

“We’re stronger together, and excited for this made-in-Sicamous ferry pilot project,” said Mayor Colleen Anderson. “Sicamous will have a unique, fun, safe and reliable access to the Sicamous Beach Park and the rail trial, and we thank all those who made this possible for our community and visitors to enjoy.”
