The Sooke Region Museum is throwing open its doors and offering visitors a unique look at all they have to offer, but if a behind-the-scenes look at the history of Sooke doesn't reel you in, then maybe the smell of grilled salmon will.
Since 1977, the Sooke Historical Society has operated the Sooke Region Museum & Visitor Centre and each year has offered an open house event.
“It’s a pleasure to see longtime Sooke residents get together at this annual event, while newcomers to the community come to learn more about the area they now call home. Providing this sense of place and local identity is a big part of what we do," shares society president Doni Eve.
An inside look at the secret storage, archives, Moss Cottage and Triangle Island lighthouse, along with a salmon barbecue – prepared over an open fire – mark some of the highlights of the Sunday, June 22 event.
The activities begin at 11 a.m. with Gord Philips taking the main stage and tours of the collections, storage and processing areas.
"If you’ve ever wondered what happens to an object once it is donated to the museum, this is your chance," said Michelle Richard, executive director of the SRM, in a news release.
The event will give a unique inside look at the museum's archives, as collections staff, who typically work behind the scenes, share pieces in the collection with community members. The collection is sure to hold some fun surprises, especially considering only four per cent is currently on display.
Mobile exhibits will be displayed in the Pavilion exploring themes of water, wool, photography and math, with some hands-on activities provided at each station.
Meanwhile, the museum and the temporary exhibit – Detours: Bypass the Expected – will be open all day for admission by donation.
Admission to the event is free, with food available for purchase and donations accepted to support the organization.
Tickets for the salmon barbecue go on sale at 11 a.m. with food served at noon. The full meal will include salmon, potato salad, a bun and strawberry shortcake for dessert – with strawberries from the historic Woodside Farm. Hot dogs and burgers (meat and veggie) will be available as well.
