Victoria Police (VicPD) has urged residents to be vigilant after a cougar was spotted in the vicinity of Glenlyon Norfolk School.

The big cat was seen Thursday (May 29) just before 8 a.m. in the 800-block of Bank Street, said police in a statement.

Police officers are in the area and BC Conservation Service has been advised. The school has also taken steps to ensure the safety of its students and staff.

Anyone who encounters the cougar is advised by VicPD to move away slowly and call 911.

The Victoria cougar follows a string of sightings across the region in recent weeks.

A juvenile female cougar was captured and relocated in Sidney May 22, after multiple sightings in a residential area. Saanich Police Department said they had received several reports of cougar sightings in the 4200-block of Cedar Hill Road on May 23.
