In collaboration with numerous community partners, Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea is set to host World Ocean Day on Sunday, June 1, at Beacon Park on the SETINES/Sidney waterfront.
The free event, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., promises a day of fun, education and interactive activities for all ages, highlighting the importance of ocean conservation.
The festivities kick off with a storytime session by the Vancouver Island Regional Library at 11:30 a.m., followed by a science show presented by Vancouver's Science World from noon to 2 p.m.
Attendees can explore interactive and educational booths, featuring organizations dedicated to marine research, conservation and education. They can also engage with a touch pool, capture memories at a themed photo booth, unleash their creativity in the art tent and enjoy classic lawn games.
Artist demonstrations by Amanda Key and Nicole Jung from McTavish Academy of Art, ArtSea and Ocean Minded Media, showcasing the art of Mads O'Connell and Joshua Ralph, will further enrich the artistic atmosphere.
The event coincides with Ocean Week Victoria 2025 (June 1-8), which will be officially unveiled on May 27 at the Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea.
Launched in 2020, Ocean Week Victoria is a regional partner of Ocean Week Canada, a national initiative to bring awareness to ocean health and conservation, while providing a fun and family-friendly way to enjoy the ocean.
Ocean Week Victoria promises a packed schedule of public events centred around discovery and ocean education, involving over 30 organizations and businesses hosting more than 40 events.
Attendees can expect everything from nature walks and science talks to festivals, films, art exhibitions, paddle events, pub trivia nights, beach clean-ups and even a career fair.
With a diverse range of activities, Ocean Week Victoria ensures there's something for everyone to enjoy and learn about the importance of our oceans.
