Wounded Warrior runners make way through Parksville Qualicum Beach region

PHOTOS: Team of 8 runners began in Port Hardy on Feb. 23

The 2025 Wounded Warrior runners stopped in Bowser, Qualicum Beach and Parksville as they worked to complete a challenging 800-kilometre trek across Vancouver Island.

The goal is to raise funds and to bring awareness for the mental health programs provided by Wounded Warriors Canada, to trauma-exposed members of the military and first responders.

The team of eight runners started in Port Hardy on Feb. 23 and worked their way to District 69 on Thursday, Feb. 27, where they were welcomed at Bowser Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 211 and also connected with students at the Bowser Elementary School.

Following that the team made its way to the Qualicum Beach Legion Branch No. 76 where they were treated to a hot lunch and greeted by supporters. They finished their day trip with a run up The Hump towards at the Port Alberni Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 293 before calling it a day. It was one of their longest runs, covering a total distance of 105 kilometres from Courtenay to Port Alberni.

One of the most touching moments of the day was when runner Jason Laidman, who just announced his retirement as Victoria Police deputy chief after more than 30 years on Feb. 28, was surprised by daughter Emily, who came out to support him and ran the remaining five kilometre distance with him.

After a night's rest, they arrived at the Parksville Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 49. Legion president Roy Dewar and president of the Ladies Auxiliary Sue Hodges presented the Wounded Warriors a giant cheque for $2,000. As well, the Legion's bake sale raised close to $500 that they donated to Wounded Warriors. The Parksville Lions Club also handed a $1,000 cheque and the Parksville Fire Department also presented a $250 donation.

Run director Jacqueline Zweng, who has been with Wounded Warriors since 2017, announced that they already raised $160,000, which gets them closer to their goal of $250,000.
