I late May, the Cowichan Valley Wrestling Club sent two of its top athletes — Brayden Zuback and Layla Boyland — to the National U17 Cadet Trials in Edmonton.
"Both wrestlers showcased incredible determination and talent against the best competition in the country," said club head coach Nick Zuback.
Brayden Zuback delivered an exceptional performance, finishing second in the fiercely competitive 45 kg boys class.
In the gold medal match, Zuback staged an impressive comeback, tying the score 4-4 in the closing moments. With the match decided on criteria, he needed just one more point — an effort that saw him drive his opponent out of the ring. However, the final whistle blew just before he could complete the take-down, securing his second-place finish.
Zuback will now serve as the alternate to represent Canada at the upcoming U17 Junior Pan Am Games in Rio de Janeiro June 19-21.
Meanwhile, Layla Boyland battled valiantly in the 57 kg girls class. She fought hard through a challenging bracket, ultimately finishing in a strong fourth place, just shy of the podium.
"Both wrestlers represented the Cowichan Valley with pride and showcased the dedication and skill that define their club’s reputation," Zuback added.
Wrestling for Takedown Academy in Vancouver, Cowichan's Cassidy Pace also placed first in her weight class and will represent Canada in Brazil.
In other wrestling news, Carter Zuback has committed to wrestle for the Lakehead University Thunderwolves for the 2025-26 season. Lakehead is the school both of his parents wrestled for during their post-secondary wrestling careers.
"Carter's dedication, resilience, and hard work on the mats have earned him this incredible opportunity to compete at the U Sports level," said the club. "His journey with CVWC has been nothing short of inspiring, and we know he’ll make a huge impact with the Thunderwolves."
Zuback will be joined by CVWC teammate Ross Meiner at Lakehead University.
"Ross has been a powerhouse on the mats, showcasing relentless dedication, hard work, and the heart of a true competitor," said the club. "His journey from CVWC to the U Sports stage is a testament to his passion for the sport and commitment to excellence."
