New Democrat MLA Jennifer Rice says that people in the Bella Coola Valley will be safer during future flooding events thanks to the completion of a flood mitigation planning project.
“Floods and other climate emergencies pose a large threat to rural, remote and First Nations communities,” said Jennifer Rice, MLA for North Coast.
“Funding flood planning and mitigation helps prevent devastating outcomes for people, particularly when we know the flooding risks present in the Bella Coola Valley.”
The Nuxalk Nation received $99,900 in funding for Nuxalk Nation’s Main Village flood mitigation planning. The project involved undertaking flood mitigation planning for the Nuxalk Nation’s Main Village through the development of a comprehensive plan that assesses existing infrastructure, identifies mitigation options, and conducts a multiple accounts evaluation. The mitigation plan is of critical importance to the Nation, as the community experiences impacts from flooding on a regular basis.
Across the province, a total of 24 flood mitigation projects have been recently completed to make people and communities safer. The projects were supported by more than $10.8 million in funding, cost-shared by the provincial and federal governments.
