Pattullo Bridge has now reopened to traffic – ahead of schedule over the Victoria Day long weekend.
The bridge was originally scheduled to be closed to all traffic, other than pedestrians and cyclists, until 5 a.m. on Tuesday, May 20.
A notice from TransLink on Sunday evening, May 18, noted the bridge has now opened ahead of schedule.
"This work has finished earlier than scheduled," the information bulletin said shortly after 6:15 p.m. on Sunday.
"Ongoing construction work" was the reason for the closure TransLink says, as a new crossing is built to connect Surrey with New Westminster.
Work on the replacement bridge involved drainage installation and new foundations for the approaches, according to the regional transportation authority.
"Excavation will take place over the weekend, blocking access to the bridge. Bridge lanes will also be taken up by equipment to complete the work."
Motorists were rerouted to the Port Mann and Alex Fraser bridges instead, and buses were rerouted.
The new four-lane bridge is scheduled to open later this year, promises a post on pattullobridgereplacement.ca. "The existing bridge will remain in use until the new bridge is open to traffic. Once the new bridge is open, the existing bridge will be removed."
