They came by car, by foot, by bike, by stroller, by bus and by wheelchair – all to celebrate the Abbotsford Canucks historic Calder Cup title victory on Monday (June 23).
An estimated 500-plus people gathered on South Fraser Way in Abbotsford and hundreds of others rolled by with horns honking and flags waving to celebrate the franchise's first-ever championship.

Traditionally a gathering point of Vancouver Canucks playoff success, South Fraser Way is a well-used thoroughfare that rolls from west Abbotsford's Peardoville Road, goes past Abbotsford City Hall and Sevenoaks Shopping Centre, zig zags through downtown Abbtosford and connects all the way to Sumas Way in east Abbotsford.
The honking and car flag waving began at around 6:40 p.m., shortly after the Canucks hung on for a 3-2 win and defeated the Charlotte Checkers inside the iconic Bojangles Coliseum to win the Calder Cup.
Then the crowd started coming and gathered on the sidewalks, screaming and clad mostly in green to honour the massive win.

Many parked at Abbotsford's West Oaks Mall and then strolled to the sidewalk where they gathered three or four deep. Fans cheered from the sidewalks, as cars honked, revved their engines and generally lost their minds in joy.
The Abbotsford Police Department was on-hand early and provided crowd support and made sure that fans were not entering the road. The right lane heading east was also blocked in certain spots by APD vehicles to ensure safety for everyone involved.
The crowd was mostly well-behaved and were merely in shock and adulation that a team with the name Canucks won anything of any kind of magnitude. Vancouver, the parent club, has failed to win a Stanley Cup in 55 years of existence and do not appear to be capturing hockey's grandest prize anytime soon.
Many fans were speaking of their desire to have a parade to celebrate even more and it still remains to be seen what the team's future plans are. Based on the attendance of this spontaneous gathering, one would assume that an Abbotsford Canucks victory parade would have significant interest.
