The hometown boy and captain makes good.
Vernon Vipers captain and local player Erik Pastro is one of the B.C. Hockey League's Kyle Turris Community Award winners for 2024-25. The award is given to BCHL players who go above and beyond in their community.
Each team submits a winner from their organization, along with the reasons they were chosen.
Pastro just completed his second full season with his hometown team, and according to the Vipers' nomination,"truly embraced the spirit of community involvement."
"Known for his dedication both on and off the ice, Erik has consistently been one of the first players to step forward for a variety of community events," said the club. "Whether it’s lending a hand at local fundraisers, participating in team outreach programs or simply showing up to support causes close to the hearts of Vernon residents, Erik’s enthusiasm and commitment have made him a standout figure in the community.”
One player from each team in the league receives the award, named after the former BCHL star who led the Burnaby Express to the 2006 Fred Page Cup BCHL championship and the Royal Bank Cup national Junior A title.
Turris was picked third overall in the 2007 NHL draft by the Phoenix Coyotes. He played parts of 16 NHL seasons with the Coyotes, Ottawa Senators, Nashville Predators, and Edmonton Oilers.
