Attendees at the Vernon Fish and Range Club will have the chance to fire 22 caliber guns, just like Morning Star journalist Brendan Shykora (pictured).

This year's annual Range Day in Vernon will offer more than just target shooting.

The Vernon Fish and Game Club will be hosting the Scoot and Shoot Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) Team Biathlon on Saturday, June 21.

"We wanted to add a bit of a twist this year, to get more folks into it," said Clint Ingham, chairperson of the Vernon Range Day. "I envision it as a biathlon-type event, with a timed loop on an ATV or off-road vehicle, followed by shooting."

Attendees will have the chance to fire 22-calibre pistols and rifles, while also going for an hour-long off-road loop around either Becker Lake or Bardolph Lake.

Ingham added the twist with the off-road component after watching a biathlon race, and thought it could be applied for their annual Range Day, which typically brings out hundreds.

"We are always trying to get more people out, and we want to share our passion for shooting and off-road fun with more people," Ingham said.

Registration is open to all ages six and up at vernonrangeday.ca/registration/. No previous firearm experience or training is necessary, and lunch is included. Teams of two adults can sign up for $80, with a youth team (one adult and one youth under 19) costing $60.

The best combined score across the shooting and driving stages will win a prize.

The fun gets started at 9 a.m. You can find the club by turning off Highway 6 onto Noble Canyon Road and following the yellow signs to the gun range on Bardolph Lake Forest Service Road.
