Eight competitors have signed up for the Williams Lake Stampede mountain race and two more spots remain open.
Contestants include Darren Sulin, Towdystan, William Smithers, Merritt, Shae Spiker, Williams Lake, Oliver Lindley, Merritt, Conway Lulua, Leo Quilt and Steve Quilt, all from Nemiah Valley.
“There are two that are on the fence so I expect by the time Stampede rolls around they will cowboy or cowgirl up and we will see a full 10 contestants to show off the mountain race,” said race coordinator Jimmy Lulua.
On Monday, June 26, Lulua was going over the track with Spiker, who is a newcomer to the race, the only woman signed up so far.
Spiker moved to Williams Lake from Alberta.
All the other riders who have signed up so far are veterans, Lulua said.
The mountain race will happen Thursday, June 29 through Sunday, July 2, roughly about one hour after the performances start at the rodeos.
Lulua said there is always a struggle to find funding for the race and encouraged any corporate sponsors to consider stepping up and sponsor the race every year.
“That would be very appreciated,” he said.
His goal would be to see the sponsorship match that of the World Famous Suicide Race at the Omak Stampede.
