Dominion Day takes place on Canada Day, July 1

The old town streets of Barkerville were filled with people to celebrate the 157th annual Dominion Day and Canada Day on Tuesday, July 1.

People in attendance gathering in front of the St. Saviour’s Anglican Church to participate in the Canada Day Drumming, a nation-wide event that takes place simultaneously across the country.

After that, the annual parade started at 11:50 a.m. from the church down to the Chinatown Arch.

Through the day there was a variety of games for patrons to take part in including broad jump, ladies’ nail driving, funny face, men’s hammer toss, ladies’ egg and spoon, egg toss, greasy pole climb, and tug o’ war.

In one of the most fierce and most contests of the day, 12 kids battled in a gold panning competition as well.

As the day turned to night, live music, dancing, and entertainment echoed throughout the House Hotel Saloon, highlighted by a performance from the Interstellar Jays.
