Fraser Valley Aboriginal Children and Family Services Society is hosting several Abbotsford fishing workshops for Indigenous children.

With the popularity of fishing continuing to rise in B.C., the Fraser Valley Aboriginal Children and Family Services Society (FVACFSS) wants to help as many Indigenous children as possible embrace what remains a beloved cultural activity.

The FVACFSS announced that it will be hosting three workshops in partnership with the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC, inviting Indigenous youth between the ages of six and 19 to experience the world of fishing.

This is a recreational activity that many Indigenous and non-Indigenous individuals in B.C. already participate in each year, with Fisheries and Oceans Canada reporting that 333,478 B.C. residents acquired tidal waters sport fishing licences in 2024, setting an all-time record for the province.

These fishing workshops are taking place at the Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery in Abbotsford and will include lunch, education about fishing throughout the Fraser Valley, lessons on proper techniques, and an afternoon of hands-on fishing experience.

While the event is designed for local youth, any parents or caregivers of participants are also able to join in the workshops.

Events are planned for June 27, July 16, and Aug. 19, taking place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on all three days.

Anyone interested in participating can register for one of the free events by emailing registration@xyolhemeylh.bc.ca.
