The City of Castlegar is hosting a Canada Day event at Millennium Park on July 1.

The free family-friendly event will kick off with an Indigenous welcome and the singing of O'Canada at 11 a.m. and last until 3 p.m.

Highlights include free hamburgers, juice and cake (while supplies last) and live entertainment. Vegetarian burgers and chicken hot dogs will also be available until supplies run out.

A kids play zone will feature blow-up bounce activities, face painting, crafts, stickers, tattoos, flags, games and more.

Live entertainment will be ongoing throughout the day including Filipino and East Indian dancers, Quinn Stainer, Miranda Aileen and Midnight Rider.

Another special treat will be that sculptor Peter Vogellar will be creating a sand sculpture at the park.

There will also be at least one dozen vendors on site.

The current weather forecast is calling for hot temperatures so attendees are encouraged to come prepared for hot weather with sunscreen, water, hats, etc.

The park concession will be open and will have drinks, ice cream and other items for sale.

A free shuttle bus will be provided by MTI starting at 10:30 a.m. at the Castlegar and District Community Complex with an additional pickup at the Station Museum and drop-off at Millennium. The return trip will go in reverse order and end at the Complex. It will run every 30 minutes with the last ride out of Millennium Park at 3:30 p.m.

The event is being organized by the City of Castlegar, but a number of sponsors have come on board including Rotary, Trowelex, Castlegar Arts Council, CanTac Candies, Safeway, Superior Propane, Kootenay Savings, Teck, Urban Systems, Fortis BC, Columbia Basin Trust, Columbia Power, Regional District of Central Kootenay and Canadian Heritage.

"We could not do this event without our sponsors and volunteers, which we are so very thankful for," said Castlegar councillor Sue Heaton-Sherstibitoff who heads the event committee.
