The North Island Metis Association, We Wai Kai Nation and Tiicma Fisheries are just three of 100 Indigenous-led throughout the province that have received funding to strengthen local food security and food sovereignty.
The New Relationship Trust (NRT) launched a $30-million Indigenous Food Security and Sovereignty Program for both on and off-reserve projects. Projects include revitalizing food harvesting and Indigenous agro-ecosystems, expansion of production capacity, boosting local food processing and distribution, and growing commercial value-added enterprises.
The North Island Metis Association will be using its funding for food security training. The We Wai Kai Nation will be using the funding to purchase food processing equipment. Tiicma Fisheries will be using its funding for a scallop farm.
NRT is an independent non-profit organization led by Indigenous people and works with Indigenous entrepreneurs, communities and businesses.
“At New Relationship Trust, we recognize that strengthening sustainable food production in B.C. starts with honouring Indigenous leadership and vision for food systems rooted in both land and water,” said Walter Schneider, chief executive officer of NRT. “We’re proud to support Indigenous food producers who are driving community well-being, economic growth and food sovereignty, all while upholding their values and deep connection to the land.”
Applications opened on May 13 for the third and final round of $10 million, adding to the $30 million funding from the Indigenous Food Security and Sovereignty over the past three years.
