Re: 'Parksville residents need to do more for cyclists' (Letters, PQB News, June 4)
While I agree that motorists need to do more to ensure the safety of cyclists and pedestrians, I believe it is the cyclists that need to do more to ensure their safety.
Some of the things I see cyclists do on a regular basis are blowing through stop signs and red lights sometimes without even slowing down; riding in the wrong lane, i.e., riding westbound in the eastbound lane; riding two or more abreast instead of single file; talking on a cellphone while riding; no lights, reflectors, or high visibility clothing at night; riding down the middle of a lane impeding traffic; improper turn signals - a right arm out straight right is not the proper signal for a right turn, and finally failure to wear a helmet.
I also disagree with the writer's statement that vehicles are bigger and heavier - on the contrary I believe they are smaller, lighter and more fuel efficient.
It is everyone's responsibility ensure their safety - drivers, pedestrians and in particular, cyclists.
